For their environmental project, the “Green Team” campers from last summer’s Youth Environmental Leadership Camp (YELC), mentored by Ron Unger, have demonstrated their ingenuity and creativity by inventing a fun new game that will engage people and help the environment! The Go Green Game was invented by YELC Green Team members, who are in 6th grade. These amazing youth leaders were inspired to develop the game after visiting the California Air Resources Board’s Cool California website. The Go Green Game has already been reviewed and beta-tested by SMUD and Splash staff! The goal of the game is for players to have fun and compete by making easy and affordable changes in the way they do things in their everyday lives! These simple changes can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help the Sacramento community and our planet. The team is excited that local and state air and energy agencies are taking an interest in the Go Green Game and the team’s youth leadership efforts!
Do you like games? Do you want to help the planet? The Green Team is still looking to recruit some players to play the Go Green Game for four weeks from mid-March through mid-April. This will be the pilot period to discover and work out any kinks that are encountered. To sign up and play the Go Green Game, you will need a Scratch account. Scratch is a free visual programming language and online community where anyone can create their own stories, games, and animations. You can create a free Scratch account by clicking here: https://scratch.mit.edu/join.
Once you have your Scratch account, you can send your login name to info@sacsplash.org. Your name will be added, and you’ll receive instructions on how to play. You can also email if you have any questions about the game.
In addition to developing their very cool online game, the Green Team members also recently participated in a tree planting event, sponsored by the Sacramento Tree Foundation. The event was held on 2/28/23 at John H. Still Middle School in Sacramento. If you would like to learn more about upcoming tree planting events with the Sacramento Tree Foundation, please check out their Events Calendar.
Way to go YELC Green Team!
