Splash is Hiring Field Guides/Docents!

Would you like to work with Splash and help connect kids and families to nature in our region?  Splash is looking to hire field guides and docents for our exciting programs!

We are planning to deliver in-person field trips for school classes and public groups around the vernal pool grasslands at Mather Field this spring.  In preparation, we need to hire enthusiastic, part-time, seasonal guides to help lead these groups in the field and engage them with hands-on science activities in the Splash Center.

Seasonal guides for our vernal pool programs will lead three-hour field trips for groups of 10-12 elementary students, facilitating the students’ discoveries in the vernal pool grassland.  The guides will also lead indoor activities at the Splash Center, such as helping students identify aquatic invertebrates at the microscope station, demonstrating the watershed/stormwater quality model, and showing live animals in our Critterville room.  Essential qualifications include a background and interest in biology/natural history, a love of nature, an ability and desire to work with children, an engaging and friendly personality, and a commitment to work the entire 2022 field trip season from now to early-May.

We also hope that the seasonal guides for the Field Trips will help lead our five (5) 2-hour Vernal Pool Public Walks in spring each year – Critter Walks in March and Flower Walks in April and May. Help us highlight the many critters and/or flowers in Mather Field! Hundreds of families and individuals come to explore with us! Guides may also help lead indoor activities at the Splash Center, such as helping at the microscope station and showing live animals in our Critterville room.  Essential qualifications include a background and interest in biology/natural history, a love of nature, an engaging and friendly personality.

Splash is also hiring guides for Project AWE, which runs field trips at the historic Nicolaus Dairy, part of the Bufferlands that surround Regional San’s Wastewater Treatment Facility in Elk Grove, CA.  Project AWE is currently conducting two types of field trips.  One field trip, “Moovin’ into the Valley,” focuses on the history of the dairy industry in the Central Valley and engages students with exhibits and activities at the historic dairy facility.  The other field trip, “Dirt to Dinner,” focuses on the origins of the food we eat, including the roles that the sun, decomposers, soil quality, water, plant structures, and fertilizers play in producing nutritious food.

If you’re interested in working with Splash in one or more of these programs, please email a cover letter and resumé to Splash CEO, Mackenzie Wieser at mackenzie@sacsplash.org.  We hope to hear from you soon!
