Check out those sweet eyes and adorable “toe beans!” It’s probably the cutest little critter you’ll NEVER see! Meet the very nocturnal and secretive ringtail, Bassariscus astutus, a lesser-known cousin of the raccoon! You might have heard this critter referred to as a “ringtail cat.” Although they’re the size of a very small domestic cat, about 3 pounds or so, they aren’t at all related to cats. Some say the ringtail has the body of a small slender cat and the face of a fox. In fact, the scientific name, Bassariscus astutus, translates from ancient Greek to “cunning little fox.” Yet these cuties aren’t related to foxes, either!
