For Sam Diaz, Senior Ecoengineer at cbec Engineering, fostering a deep understanding of the natural world isn’t just part of his job—it’s his passion. He believes that by working together, organizations like cbec Engineering and Sacramento Splash can shape a future where both the environment and humanity thrive.
“Our mission at cbec is to develop innovative, multi-benefit solutions that improve the health of natural environments while meeting human needs,” Sam shares. “It’s not just about building projects—it’s about creating sustainable, eco-sensitive solutions that leave ecosystems better than we found them.“
For 17 years, cbec has specialized in water resources engineering, with projects ranging from coastal estuaries to mountain meadows. And recently, they’ve taken that commitment even further by partnering with Sacramento Splash, aligning with their shared goal of educating the community about the natural world.

A Shared Vision of Environmental Stewardship
One of the many ways cbec contributes to Sacramento Splash is its involvement in the Youth Environmental Leadership Camp (YELC). “For the past three years, we’ve hosted ‘Water Day’ as part of YELC,” Sam explains. “It’s an incredibly hands-on day where we engage campers in designing river rehabilitation and erosion control, giving them a basic understanding of fluvial geomorphology.“
This partnership goes beyond just teaching kids about science—it’s about sparking curiosity, fostering environmental stewardship, and showing them career paths they might never have considered. “It’s amazing to see their faces light up when they realize that protecting the environment can actually be a job. We’re not just raising awareness; we’re planting the seeds for future eco engineers,” Sam says.
Making a Difference, One Project at a Time
CBEC’s mission perfectly aligns with Splash’s goals of nurturing a generation of children who value the natural world and take an active role in protecting it. Sam emphasizes, “Much of our work is designed to promote sustainability and improve ecosystem services. By partnering with Splash, we work with the next generation of environmental stewards who will carry that mission forward.“
Sam recalls a particular moment during a visit to Cordova Creek with the YELC campers. “We talked about the benefits of restoration and rehabilitation, and I could see the campers connecting the dots—how their actions today could make a difference in the future. Moments like these show me we’re making an impact.”

Looking Ahead: Building a Sustainable Future
When asked about the future, Sam is optimistic. “We’ll continue to perform ecosystem restoration and enhancement work here in Sacramento and beyond. But the long-term success of these projects depends on educating the community—and that’s where Sacramento Splash comes in. We’re building a future where people care about their environment and have the tools to protect it.“
How You Can Help
You don’t have to be an eco engineer to make a difference! Sam encourages everyone to stay informed and engaged. “One of the best ways to support our work is by voting. Most of our funding comes from federal and state grants often made available through California ballot measures. These measures fund restoration projects that help sustain the natural world.”
Together, through partnerships like the one between cbec Engineering and Sacramento Splash, we can inspire future generations to become stewards of the environment. And it starts with each of us taking small steps to make a lasting impact.
