Project AWE: Hands-On Learning That Sparks Curiosity
For many students, stepping off the bus at Project AWE begins a transformative journey filled with hands-on discovery, unexpected confidence, and a new appreciation for the world around them. As Project AWE Program Manager Garrett Werner reflects on the program’s launch, it’s clear that the captivity of Splash is alive and thriving.
The Buzz of Excitement
From the moment the students arrive, their energy is contagious. “We have just finished week three, and the students’ excitement from the moment they get off the bus until they get back on has been incredible,” Garrett shares. “That excitement reinforces how Splash creates magic that the kids can’t get enough of the whole day!”
Memorable Moments & Small Wins That Matter
It’s not just about learning; it’s about experiencing something completely new. “Seeing kids step out of their comfort zone is so impactful,” Garrett explains. “Students have held worms, fed chickens, sampled fresh-grown food, tasted honey, dissected a flower, and met goats up close and personal, just to name a few.“ These seemingly small moments can have a lasting impact. Something as simple as holding a worm could be the first step toward newfound confidence that carries into other aspects of their lives.

Learning Beyond the Classroom
What makes Project AWE unique? According to Garrett, the answer is simple: “Hands-on.”
“The students can investigate and learn through exploration and observation. As the great Ms. Frizzle said, ‘Take chances, make mistakes, get messy!'” Unlike traditional classroom learning, these experiences immerse students in agriculture, water, energy, and environmental science in a way that sticks with them long after they leave.
A Fresh Perspective on Their Backyard
Project AWE isn’t just about discovery; it’s about shifting perspectives. Garrett emphasizes how important it is for students to see their community through a new lens. “The Central Valley and farm country is often overlooked as an ecologically important place,” he says. “In reality, the Central Valley hosts some of California’s most biologically rich environments.“ Just minutes from home, students are immersed in biodiversity, plants, wildlife, insects, and birds, all thriving in an environment they might never have noticed.
Why Get Involved? For parents, educators, and community members considering participating in Project AWE, Garrett has one piece of advice: “Do it! It’s so close to home and yet so impactful.“ The hands-on, interactive nature of the program provides students with an unforgettable experience that opens their eyes to the environment in ways a textbook never could.

Looking Ahead
As field trips continue through May 23rd, Garrett is eager to witness the seasonal transformations. “Already, the trees and plants are coming alive again, and the amount of birds singing is off the hook!“ He’s incredibly excited for returning students who have experienced Project AWE in different grade levels and to see how the environment shifts with time.
