There’s something magical about watching students connect with nature, especially when it becomes their classroom for eight unforgettable weeks. That’s precisely what Sacramento Splash offers this fall through its 2025 Homeschool Field Study Program, an immersive, hands-on science adventure for homeschoolers in grades 6–8.
Program Coordinator Meghan Amos has seen it firsthand: transformation happens when kids trade desks for binoculars and dive into the rich world of the vernal pool preserve.
“While some see a dry field, our students uncover vibrant life and complex systems,” Meghan explains. “They’re exploring adaptations, habitats, and conservation in a real and exciting way.”
Students will dig into topics explore the fascinating connections between native plants and local wildlife. Through hands-on activities, students will investigate plant life cycles, discover the importance of pollinators, and learn how to cultivate a thriving California native pollinator garden. Along the way, they’ll meet local birds, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals—uncovering how each is uniquely adapted to this special ecosystem. They will use tools like microscopes, loupes, and field journals. It’s a deep dive into ecology, sparked by wonder and guided by curiosity.
And this year’s program has something extra special: a student-designed interpretive garden. Meghan can’t wait.
“They’ll get to create a lasting feature that reflects the preserve’s ecological beauty. It’s something they can show their families and say, ‘I helped build that.’”
So why does this program matter? Meghan believes middle schoolers are at the perfect age for something this transformative.
“They’re forming their identities, discovering their interests. Nature-based learning gives them ownership, builds confidence, and inspires them to care about their world.”
